Registry cleaners – should I pay for one?

User Rating: / 5

Short answer: no

Longer answer: probably not. Registry Cleaners are very popular and very heavily marketed applications claiming to clean up and speed up your Windows installation. But trying to find unbiased information on them is pretty hard. The spammers and web marketer’s pages dominate any search you care to run with the words “registry cleaner” in them. They have multiple fake “Software Report” type pages pretending to test various cleaners and tell you which ones are best. Needless to say they are either put up by the cleaner companies or just clever folk making a few cents on every click-though they get. But these things sell in their thousands so sure they must be providing a useful service? Well maybe but maybe not.

Do I need to clean my computer?

User Rating: / 7

A common question I get as a mobile computer engineer is "Do I need to clean my computer?", as in physically clean it. The simple answer to this is "Yes, but be careful how you do it".

Your average home or small-business PC sits under desk, on a relatively dusty bit of carpet, sucking in thousands of cubic meters of air a year. So it should come as no surprise that a significant quantity of dust, hair and other detritus passes through your computer's case. Some of this dirt sticks to parts of the computer and builds up over time. This build up can cause pretty serious problems.

Got a virus? No need to reinstall

Got a virus? No need to reinstall Windows

Speaking to several clients recently, it has come to my notice that lots of people when faced with a disabling malware or virus infection reinstall Windows because they AV software or tips from websites don't work. Worst still, they are sometimes paying computer engineers to do this.

Before you consider doing this please give MobileTechie a call. We can remove over 90% of virus, fake anti-virus, spyware, rootkits and other malware infections with no need to reinstall Windows or lose any data. We can do this onsite, remotely or back at the workshop and often it only takes a matter of minutes.

It doesn't matter if you cannot download or run antivirus applications or even if you cannot boot into Windows. With the right knowledge and tools the VAST majority of infections can be manually removed leaving your system as it was before it was infected.

If you have or think you have a malware infection called MobileTechie first and see what we can do for you....don't waste time and money on needless Windows reinstallations.

A quick Windows 7 networking tip

User Rating: / 10

Microsoft has improved the flakey Windows networking model in Windows 7 but it's still not perfect. The Homegroup system should make networking  a breeze, as long as all the computers involved are running Windows 7. However there are some quirks. One such annoyance crops up when using security apps which include their own firewall. In order for the Homegroup discovery service to operate Windows Firewall must be running and so if your security app has its own then it is likely to have turned the Windows one off thus making it impossible for your computers to find the Homegroup you've just set up. Something to check when you've been banging your head against this particular brick wall.
